Globalhead

Bruce Sterling

Bruce was kind enough to have a copy of Globalhead, his latest short story collection, sent to us for review in the Update. Unfortunately, it arrived after our deadline and we didn't have time to do it justice.

Globalhead contains 13 stories, most of them previously published. Bruce read the previously unpublished "Are You For 86?" at the 1992 Armadillocon SF convention in Austin. It is a hysterical tale about a Japanese all-female heavy metal band that finances their tour of the US by selling the abortion drug RU486. Bruce's reading was intensely wonderful, filled with drama, dark comedy, and that cynical punky "charm" that is Sterling's trademark. He had the audience in stitches 'til Entertainment Tonight crashed the party, looking for footage for a bit they were doing on cyberpunk films. Bruce took it all in stride and had the audience's attention back for the story's hysterical conclusion where Operation Rescue....oh wait...I don't want to give it away. You wouldn't believe me if I told you anyway.
