Thoughts on Zines

by Mike Gunderloy

Revolution starts inside, but our memes spread it to other venues.

There are people who agree with you in zinedom, somewhere.

Zines are not the large press writ small. They are not massless communication.

Any politics,
any religion,
any race,
any ideals,
any sex,
any gender,
any anything.

Thinking and doing do not precede writing; they accompany it.

Every network of zines connects with every other network... the trick is to find the link.

You cannot describe the network of networks in a simple essay. Only snapshots exist.

Zines are not tied to any one medium. Print, sound, vision... direct interface with the brain.

Comics are a serious business.

Some of us can become almost pure channels for information.

Publishing recognizes no boundaries.

Entropy requires no maintenance.

Experimental writing only works sometimes. That's what makes it an experiment.

"All knowledge is contained in fanzines" - Science Fiction fan saying.

If we all work together, things will not be nearly as fun as they are now.

Linear text still has its uses. McLuhan and Fuller have good ideas, not the only ideas.

Form follows function, but never catches it.

It's the thought that counts... and the presentation.

Free press is for everyone. Technology and politics are both needed to insure this.

We are too young to be as old as we are. - Frank Comito.

The boundaries between art and life, avocation and vocation are dissolving.

Publishing is a virus transmitted by the written word. There is no cure but indulgence.

They won't tell you the truth. We will, but we won't make it easy to find or understand.

Desktop Publishing is merely a typewriter with delusions of grandeur.

The best zines have a passion that denies the commodity culture.

There is no beginning and no end to the network of networks that is zinedom.

There are multiple revolutions in consciousness hidden in these pages.

There are people who agree with you in zinedom, somewhere.

What is the sound of one page waiting to be read?

The reader shapes the writer shapes the reader.

Zines are not the large press writ small. They are not massless communication.

Transcending the limits of the two-dimensional page is one of our common goals.

Music infuses zine culture but does not completely dictate it.

"Zines" is an imperfect term. Life is imperfect. We do the best we can.
The trick is not to ignore the mainstream but to selectively raid it for things we can use.
