Uplink is Introversion Software's debut game that was released in 2001, and has become a cult favorite among cyberpunk fans. Its popularity is evident by the number of modifications available, thanks in part to Introversion selling a Developer CD that includes the game's source code, and by the numerous other hacking simulations that have been released since.
The player is an agent for Uplink, a secretive company that hires hacker "agents" to break into various systems to complete jobs. The jobs range from stealing and deleting files, identity and bank fraud, stealing or destroying databases, crashing mainframes, and having innocent people thrown into jail.
There's also a story in the game: The top agent, who has been working for the Andromeda Research Corporation, dies and leaves a message concerning a program called Revelation. If the player acts on the message fast enough, he gets to become part of the story and can then decide the fate of the Internet.
