Apocalypse Culture

Edited by Adam Parfrey

This book disturbed my sleep so much that I had to struggle to finish it. It was the late Eighties and I was new to the serious study of "bottom-feeder" culture. Although I've seen a lot more of this stuff since then, luckily it disturbs me no less. "Apocalypse Culture" is a gaping, festering wound of unacceptable beliefs and practices. Child molesters, necrophiliacs, self-mutilators, fascists, and paranoids are all given a place to state their cases.

My son was born while I was reading "Apocalypse Culture." After spending several weeks with this new, gentle, intoxicating little creature, I read the book's interview with Peter Sotos, former publisher of the sexually violent "Pure" magazine. As he talked about raping children, mutilating women, and his great respect for the "work" of such people as Ian Brady and Ted Bundy, I found myself wondering whether I was part of the same species as this...er... person, and whether there was room enough on the planet for the both of us.

Test the limits of your belief in free speech and your ability to hold down your lunch while in the company of maggots.

The book commences with a quote from Werner Herzog: "There is nothing more terrifying than stupidity." Yup, that about sums it up.
