Overview: Cherry 2000 is about a guy named Sam Treadwell (David Andews) who gets too hot and heavy with his perfect android wife while wallowing in soap suds - unfortunately Cherry 2000 doesn’t take to water well and gets fried. After trying his hand at post-modern dating, Sam decides he needs a new body for his Cherry chip - unfortunately the only place they exist now is in a wasteland ruled by thugs. Sam hires Melanie Griffith as his tough-chick guide to navigate through the wasteland to get his new girl.

Truly, the majority of the movie is just not that good. In fact it’s worse than not good, and passes the border to unwatchable. The acting is absolutely horrendous, as are the outfits (intentionally though), as are the set pieces, as is the dialogue, as is the pacing, etc.

The Bottom Line: If you want to see Melanie Griffith’s worst acting performance, get Cherry 2000. But truly, the reason you might want to get this is, aside from the cool fried cyberchick love scene at the beginning and maybe the “select a love-babe” scene, is for Cherry 2000’s most awesome commentary on dating in the future. Dating in the future requires a lawyer (played wonderfully by Lawrence Fishbourne - the ONLY performance in the movie that shined) and LOTS of negotiations. That scene alone, also thankfully right near the beginning, is almost worth the price of the movie.

Hi DoomAng3l, thanks! I need to do this as well. I have a bunch of folks more I want to link to. I’ve been trying to keep up with at least a review a day, but perhaps I need to stop and add some more links and do a bit more cleanup.

Hi Pops, I’m all for personal opinions differing and all, but “one of Melanie’s best movies”????

The chick turned into a great actress, but she is HORRID in this. Truly. In fact I had no idea she could act that bad. Still, Cherry 2000 could easily be a guilty pleasure - I’m sure many people enjoy it.

Oddly, regarding “Cherry 2000″, I bought the movie this month and watched it again. What’s odd is that I remembered seeing it on HBO in summer 1984, but it wasn’t made till 1987.
A fembot classic, for the faults it has. I bet when Sam told Melanie’s character he didn’t want to have to worry about her performing her risky job she began screaming that he was controlling and domineering — causing him to wish he had saved the robot and not her.

Hey! Why all the smach talk about cherry 2000? This is a great little-known b-grade from the 80s! And Melanie Griffith was hot in this movie! I consider this a midnight movie, its not something you watch after 3 cups of coffee and a clipboard to critique every last flaw… you watch it when you’re tired, when you need to chill out, after you get off work, etc…

MY gf told Cherry 2000 was a good movie and guess what? It is! I used to think Melanie Griffith was gross. Guess what? She sure wasn’t in this film!

The sci-fi themes are cool and this film has very interesting insights into male and female relations in the future. Melanie Griffith was playing a tomboy character and did a good job of it.

This film has not dated badly at well. It makes use of a lot of interesting locations which could fit in a rundown post apocalyptic world.

Criticism of this film is unwarranted. The shooting action scenes are bit lame but that is it. Otherwise I recommend watching this film.
