Ultraviolet, starring Mila Jovovich - Came March 3!

Ultraviolet screencap

~~~UPDATE: REVIEW FOR ULTRAVIOLET POSTED~~~
Yeah, OK, it appears pretty darn derivative (the trailer even has music from the original Matrix in it), but it definitely looks cool! What can I say? Hawt chicks in leathers kicking butt just work for me. Mila Jovovich looks like she fills the tough cyberpunk chick role well. If I’m guessing on how I rate this, I’m thinking it’ll garner high on the cyberpunk visuals and low on the cyberpunk themes scale.
Fangora has a description of the plot: Written and directed by Kurt (EQUILIBRIUM) Wimmer, ULTRAVIOLET takes place in the late 21st century, where a subculture of humans called Hemophages (i.e. blood drinkers) has emerged. The Hemophages have been genetically modified, giving them enhanced speed, incredible stamina and acute intelligence. To the government’s dismay, more and more of the population are being transformed, and, as a civil war looms, they have set out to rid the world of this new race that they now deem menaces to society. One rogue warrior is bent on protecting her people and seeking revenge on those who changed her life forever. With fierce martial-arts skills and chameleonic abilities, Violet (Jovovich) sets out to destroy a government-designed time bomb that will wipe out all Hemophages.
Check out the trailer for Ultraviolet in HD - definitely fun stuff!
And there’s a whole site of cool screencaps to check out. I’ll post more on this as we get closer to launch (March 3).
EDIT: Ultraviolet has been pushed back to March 3rd.
Whoa :)
but it looks like sf or cp version of the Kill Bill.
“My name is Violet, Ultra Violet” ;-)
SFAM said:
Agreed. Again, this movie doesn’t look imbued with lots of original ideas. Hopefully it will be well enough crafted to at least be fun.
Given the visuals, all we really need is a passable story to make this an enjoyable viewing experience. My fear is that there will be some story problems similar to the second half of Aeon Flux (2005) that damage this significantly.
I always had a soft spot for Mila, since she’s actually half-Montenegrin (small world, eh?). I actually know some people named Jovović, it’s a common name around Cetinje, Montenegro.
I’m hoping that Matrix-oriented marketing etc. is just that - marketing, and that this flick has something new to say… Slim hopes, I know… :p
SFAM said:
Yeah, I wouldn’t get your hopes up too far. I doubt it has something important to say, but who knows. Mila at least makes movies fun. I liked both Resident Evil movies primarily because of her, and LOVED her in fifth element. :)
She did a great job in 5E. But I cannot say the same for RE. I hope Ultraviolet is more than just gun-sword fights, bio-modification. BTW, dark hair doesnt suit her as it suits to Charlize in AeonFlux. :D
SFAM said:
I dunno, I’d a preferred someone who looked a lot more like the Aeon Flux cartoon. Although, I did really like the first half of Aeon Flux - the second half was riddled with too many story issues to continue enjoyment. RE wasn’t a terrific movie by any stretch, but I though Mila was OK in it.
I saw the trailer for this and immediately thought of you!! :D
Great site—I love your reviews—I’m getting ready to watch the movie called Pi this weekend—if I’m not mistaken it is supposed to have some cyberpunk elements.
SFAM said:
Hi Allison, I’ve actually seen Pi listed on some cyberpunk movie lists, but having watched it, I don’t agree. It’s an interesting movie and all, but I’m missing the cyberpunk tie-ins. When you see it, let me know if you disagree.
[…] Looks like Ultraviolet starring Mila Jovovich has been pushed bach from February 24th to March 3rd. Joblo reports the shift, as has other sites such as countdown. I’m not sure why yet - hopefully this just just a position jockying thing due to some of the other movies opening on the 24th. […]
Wait… “hemophages”?! Is this a fancy way of disguising a Blade/vampire story into something supposedly “new”? I sincerely hope not.
SFAM said:
Hmm…no, I don’t think they’re trying to disguise it at all :)
[…] Ultraviolet, starring Mila Jovovich, isn’t offering press showings to critics - this is never a good sign, as this usually indicates that the Studio expects bad ratings, and at least wants to capitalize on the opening weekend. Aeon Flux took this approach as well. Here’s my problem with that strategy - when the studio does this, they are pretty much DEMANDING that the critics give them bad reviews. Every critic is now UNDER PRESSURE to say the movie sucks. […]
Not bad, not great. Visually some wonderful scenes, but the movie kept cycling between great action and really boring slow scenes.
Also, some just plain foolish stuff. But as far as a decent piece of mindless brain-candy, it wasn’t too bad.
SFAM said:
Hi Rider, I agree - that’s a pretty accurate assessment. BTW, I also have a review of this Ultraviolet posted.
Pavel, thanks for your comment, but not everyone speaks Russian here. :) So, basicly - you think the movie was excellent, and you especially liked the story and the lead actress? I’m a bit rusty…
