Coming July - WarGames: The Dead Code

Wired’s Kevin Poulsen reports on the upcoming WarGames sequel that will head straight to DVD.

Not a good sign.

As always, when… or if it comes out… we will review it to confirm how sucky it is.

heh,,, as far as the trailer goes it’s not so much a sequel as a remake… To bad… would have been nice to see more new stuff than a standard “uprezzing” of the technology involved in the story.

It had potential, but the credibility was somehow lost during the last 20 years of growing internet awareness. Or rather. The hacker-image isn’t as exotic now as it was back then when only hackers and corporations used the internet. Now it’s more like a weird amalgamation between Stealth and Die Hard 4.0… At least that’s how I suppose the viewers who haven’t seen the original will view it.

LMAO, I don’t know which part of that trailer made me laugh the most. Wow. Just, wow. I agree with jmalmsten though, this is a total remake, not so much a sequel. It truly was Stealth meets Live Free or Die Hard.

Hate to say it, but most of the scenes look mostly regurgitated. It’s kind of corny like the whole “fire sale(?)” plot in the last Die Hard.

Also the GUI looks influenced by Uplink:Hacker Elite- on most of the terminals.

The first one was good. I still watch it sometimes.

Lol. I think the old Budget Flick HARDWARE / MARK 13 is still the most cyberpunk like Movie i know (at least atmospheric wise), although its a bit corny too at times. Can aynone suggest better or more recent films ?

Most of the good cyberpunk films where low budget films made before the late 90’s IMO.

I say this cause in the late 90’s big film studios got better CG technology because of advances in embedded computing power, and the low budget studios who made glaring hacker and android flicks got salvaged Disney style graphics. Admit it- the screen glare like Bladerunner and Johnny Neumonic had have an ambient effect. I seen it in some below the radar movies from the late nineties that where based on androids and time travel.

The writing has always been hit and miss with cyberpunk movies. In books you used your imagination to compensate for it, and by the conclusion you had at least a intriguing mental journey. In movies you hear and see it, and if it’s got poor scripting you get bored.

A summary and answer: All decent post nineties cyberpunk is in writing so far. In my opinion I-Robot and some other flicks came close to the cyberpunk realm, but they missed something; maybe it was more depth in dialog and background. Maybe the mental pictures reading makes are what do the trick.

A bit off topic but speaking of sci-fi series the only current series in this genre i can think of that i really like is the Galactica Reimagined series. It has this dull military look to it that sometimes is associated with Cyperpunk.
All the others like Stargate, Andromeda look bright and clean not even to mention the scripts seem to appeal to a dumbed down teen audience who confuse Science Fiction and Fantasy (especially Stargate is more Fantasy than SciFi INHO.)

I watched it… Honestly guys, this movie completely sucks.
The acting is bad.
THE SCRIPT IS WORST!
Where did you see an AI that plays online games to detect terrorists??!!
Knowing the difference between Antrax and Sarin makes you a biowarfare expert…
But not all is so bad… Once the chases begin, it gets funny, but the end… sucks again

I think anyone who watched wargames, will watch this one just because is wargames 2, but don’t expect anything to remember.

I didn’t find it any more terrible than most of the movies out there.

I do enjoy watching how the government running R.I.P.L.E.Y. seems to have little to no clue as to how she works and there just doesn’t seem to be anyone with actual control over the system. I honestly don’t know what the purpose of the people working there could be for the most part, because it seems to run and maintain itself and even if they wanted to stop her they would not have the ability. If I was running the place I’d just be like, “Hey guys, I’m going to go ahead and let you all go because you obviously don’t do anything useful here and that’s just a waste of the budget.”
